Méréville, located in the valley of the Juine, is home to the famous Château Méréville, one of the best examples of the parcs à fabriques that were fashionable during the eighteenth century. The park was designed by Hubert Robert for the Marquis de Laborde as one of the first English-style parks in France. Anchored by the medieval fortress and sprinkled with architectural follies, over the several years of its construction, marshes were drained, a mountain was moved, and a river was rerouted in order to create an idealized, romantic retreat that is still enjoyed to this day.
