"The work ‘Watermelon’: This fruit is popular in the East. This is reflected in the colour atmosphere of the painting presenting this fruit in an oriental way, as well as in the frame surrounding the open motif, reminiscent of oriental carpets and mosaics from the region.”
- The Artist on his Watermelon works, quoted in Gallery Hiba, online: https://www.galleryhiba.com/nizar-sabour
Born in Latakia in 1958, Nizar Sabour graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Damascus University, before obtaining his PhD at the Strugunov Academy of Industrial & Applied Arts, Moscow. Sabour often renders his works with animation and refined attention to detail; here, he inventively utilises crushed watermelon seeds to form the black pigment for this work. Sabour’s works have been acquired by public and private collections internationally, including the National Museum, Damascus, the National Museum of Jordan, and the Sharjah Art Museum, Sharjah.
