This bright and lively Assumption of the Virgin is a modello for the larger composition by Poerson, prevously in the collection of Cardinal Fesch in Rome and now in the National Gallery of Ireland (fig.1). Two preparatory drawings for the painting are in the Albertina, Vienna.

Charles Poerson studied under Simon Vouet, and his paintings reflect Vouet's distinctive sense of color and classical, grand compositions. Poerson received a number of important compositions, including designs for a series of tapestries depicting the Life of the Virgin in Notre Dame.
