The present lot is an intimate portrait by Congolese modernist Nkusu Felelo, a masterful artist who was largely considered to be one of the fathers of modern Congolese painting. Hailing from the eastern province of Kabinda in present day Angola, Felelo's work is deeply influenced by his piety; the artist is most known for representing common biblical scenes, which are usually radically westernized, in an African context. Felelo's work pulls Christianity back to Africa, attaching well known stories to his roots and quotidian life on the continent.
Nkusu is praised for his adeptness with colour and the daring brilliance of his unusual pairings; the present lot - wonderfully small in scale- is exemplary of his elegant yet bold hand.
