This striking work on paper by George Jules Victor Clairin relates to a painting the artist exhibited first at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1898 (no. 7) and again at the Exposition Universelle in 1900. The drawing may have been used to reproduce the painting in the English edition of Goupil’s Salon 1898, illustrated below.
