I was travelling in Geneva. The Alps were covered with snow and the sky suffused with clouds and mist. Layers of white between the cloud, mist and snow were clearly perceptible and ever changing. At that moment, my heart was completely filled by these images of clouds and mist meandering on the snowy ground, emerging layer after layer. I felt as though my soul was also afloat, as they drifted, at times denser and at times thinner. Imagery from Tang dynasty poetry came to mind. I was compelled to start painting as soon as I came back.
Chu Teh-Chun

Neige de Mai is one of the most market-popular series among the artist's snowscape collection. In 1985, Chu Teh-Chun traveled to Geneva, Switzerland for an exhibition. On his return journey, while passing through the Alps by train, he encountered a blizzard. The breathtaking scene of the fierce snowstorm deeply moved him, evoking imagery from Tang poetry, which led to the creation of his highly regarded and market-acclaimed snowscape series.

In 1987, Chu Teh-Chun held a major retrospective exhibition at the Taipei Historical Museum, marking his official return to the Chinese-speaking community after thirty-two years in France since 1955. His career flourished both in Europe and Asia, successfully establishing his international reputation, and this piece was created in the same year.

employs the traditional three-layer composition of Eastern landscape painting, with deep brown blocks forming the main structure of the image. Vigorous, short strokes inject dynamism into the scene, which is then covered with freely splashed white paint representing flying snow. The artwork is set against a rare emerald green background, adorned with snowflakes, echoing the vitality of the spring and summer seasons in May. It is a rare colorful piece within the snowscape series Neige de Mai not only embodies the Eastern "freehand" spirit through oil paint but also resonates with the dynamism and spontaneity of post-war abstract expressionism, balancing Western modern trends with Eastern cultural depth.

The snowscape series was only created between 1985 and 1990 and has been highly popular among collectors. According to available auction records, fewer than ten pieces from the snowscape series have appeared on the auction market in the past five years. In 2021, Chu Teh-Chun's snowscape series work "Harmonie hivernale" set an auction record of over 200 million Hong Kong dollars, which remains unbroken to this day. This demonstrates the unshakable status of the snowscape series in the market and among collectors.
