As a heraldic animal the bull is represented in numerous family and city coats-of-arms. In mythology it features with similar frequency, from Zeus' abduction of Europa when disguised as a white bull to Hercules capturing the Cretan Bull as his seventh labor. The symbolism is obvious (strength, power and fertility) as is its appeal in 16th and 17th century Europe. A number of bulls from this period is known, all German and modelled standing on their hind legs, including a particularly fine example marked for Hans Kellner, Augsburg, circa 1590, now in a private collection.
