In Today 1, the Chinese title of the series quotes from a line in one of Mao’s poems, directing the viewers immediately into the context of that period of history. In this series, flowers with vibrant colours as the central focus are surrounded by “people,” including political legends and dancers, which are the indispensable backbone of social and economic development in China. Yu Youhan uses techniques of collage and appropriation to integrate many elements from political propaganda as a continuation of his Political Pop creation. On the left of the canvas depicts a portrait of a typical Chinese family at that time, whose roles are suggested by their clothing. A marching band performing a song and a beautiful young girl smiling are painted on the other side of the canvas. Though painted with different styles -- these three groups of people are connected by an enormous blossom in the center and outlined by primary colours. This vivid red wild pansy, in combination with other hints of hue allude to its affiliation with the government. By enriching the picture with flower patterns and folk-art style contemporary to his times, Yu Youhan effortlessly utilizes ebullient imagery to dissolve historical and political authority.
