“Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!"
A quick and ironic sketch, yet easily recognizable in the artist's typical cursive handwriting, this drawing is part of all those notes and fantasy sketches that the artist drew for himself and his friends. The artist's Foundation is archiving this eccentric material compared to the painter's best known production, in a separate section called "Memorabilia".
1966 was a crucial year for the artist, rich with important encounters and travels between New York and Italy, during which Twombly started to work on the grey paintings, the iconography of which became the theme of the work of the next several years. Let us therefore imagine these delicate visual notes as a light and gentle parenthesis to his main artistic path.
“Oh cielo! Oh cielo! Arriverò troppo tardi!”
Schizzo veloce ed ironico tuttavia ben riconoscibile nella grafia corsiva tipica dell’artista, questo disegno fa parte di tutti quegli appunti, bozzetti, note e schizzi di fantasia che l'artista disegnava per sé e per gli amici. La Fondazione dell’artista sta archiviando questo materiale eccentrico rispetto alla produzione più conosciuta del pittore, in una sezione a parte denominata “Memorabilia”.
Il 1966 è un anno di importanti incontri e viaggi tra New York e l’Italia, durante il quale Twombly comincia a lavorare sulle lavagne grigie, tema che diverrà a lui caro per gli anni successivi. Immaginiamo quindi questi delicati appunti visivi come una parentesi leggera e lieve al suo principale percorso artistico.
