Bouguereau probably painted this oil sketch in preparing Girl with Violets (1872/02), a canvas he realized in 1872. That painting was purchased by Anthony J. Drexel of Philadelphia and bequeathed to the founding collection of Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry, now Drexel University, in 1893.
