- Bakelite Bezel
The signature bakelite bezel for the 6542.
The present GMT reference 6542 is an extremely rare and appealing example. Upon first glance, the watch looks to be a nice example of the original GMT-Master. Stamped on the gilt dial of this Rolex is the Tiffany & Co. signature, and collectors can probably count on one hand how many double stamped 6542s exist in the world, and this watch is indeed the first Tiffany 6542 to appear at auction. Though neither companies have provided any explicit dates, it is commonly accepted that Tiffany stamped Rolex dials between the late 50s to early 90s. The Rolex 6542 was produced between the years 1955 to 1959, providing only a tiny window for 6542s to be Tiffany stamped, hence the apparent rarity on the market.

Examining this particular watch closer, the current dial layout with 3 lines of Rolex text beneath the hand stack, along with the serial and case numbers that all match indicate that the present watch was manufactured in 1958, providing legitimacy to the Tiffany signature, and also allows the conclusion that the present watch was one of the earliest known Rolex wristwatches to be double stamped by Tiffany making it extremely historically significant.
