L uminous, mysteriously hypnotic and radiating a spiritual energy, Lady in Green is emblematic of New York-based artist Loie Hollowell’s highly acclaimed oeuvre. Painted in 2014, the present work demonstrates Hollowell’s characteristics synthesizing of light, colour and form to produce powerful compositions exploring sexual experience. At once beguiling, sensual and sacred, Hollowell’s work evokes the mystic energy of religious or symbolic iconography. Undulating with pulsating rhythms and radiant patterns, Lady in Green transform abstract geometries into depictions of sensuality. Her use of dramatic lighting create the illusion of depth, which Hollowell says are ‘those areas of chiaroscuro and high-intensity light are places of arousal’, she explains. ‘The pulsing light is like the body’s energy – the pulsing of sex or the pulsing of the heart’ (L. Hollowell, quoted in Wall Street International Magazine, 29 September 2017). Born in Woodland, California in 1982, Hollowell studied fine art at the University of California in Santa Barbara, graduating with a BFA in 2005. Originating in autobiography, her work explores themes of sexuality, pregnancy and birth. Whilst utilising symbolic shapes such as the mandorla, ogee, and lingam to build her distinctive visual lexicon, in referencing her own personal experiences, Hollowell’s paintings are at once personal and universal in their bold vulnerability.

"It’s satisfying rendering in these paintings, using a fan brush and getting the perfect light to dark gradient; I always feel satisfied by that. It feels like when you’re driving over a hill in the country and go over one hill and your heart jumps a little bit and then you’re going down hill and you know you made it."
Loie Hollowell, quoted in, "Interview: Loie Hollowell in Sunnyside", Two Coats of Paint, 23 September 2015, online

Characterized by her impeccably vibrating gradients that expand, contract, merge and converge, Hollowell's paintings straddle abstraction and figuration, painting and sculpture, articulating autobiographical themes and physical and psychological experiences such as sexuality, fertility, and childbirth. Frequently compared to important American artists Georgia O'Keefe and Judy Chicago, Hollowell deliberately draws upon this lineage, encouraging erotic readings of her works beyond that of her predecessors. The vibrant hues and symmetrical design of the present work elevates the singular flatness of geometrical abstraction into a visceral and seductive sculptural sphere. In Lady in Green, the radiating energy and light of the pulsating yellow half-spheres draws the viewer’s gaze into the heart of the painting. The vibrant red along this central plane references Hollowell’s own body and notions of sensuality. A mesmerising example of the frisson between the visceral and the spiritual, the climax of this work constructs notions of the female nude, arousing intangible experiences and emotions particularly tied to the female condition. Highly sought after, Loie Hollowell's artworks have featured in group and solo exhibitions in the United States, Europe, Britain, and Hong Kong. In 2021, an exhibition at Shanghai's Long Museum marked the artist's first solo museum show in mainland China.
