The present lot was one of four new self-portraits by Zanele Muholi commissioned by Autograph London for the exhibition Somnyama Ngonyama: Hail, The Dark Lioness, to commemorate the struggle for equality, freedom of movement and women’s rights in South Africa and beyond. In Bayephi I (Constitution Hill, Johannesburg, 2017), Muholi looks out at us from behind the bars of prison, dressed in recognisable SAPS (South African Police Service) blankets. Taken at the Old Fort Prison complex at Constitution Hill in Johannesburg, where many women were incarcerated for transgressing South Africa’s pass laws, they confront the difficult relationship between black South Africans and the SAPS, particularly during the apartheid regime.
