The present work is a preparatory study for Klimt’s Beethovenfries from 1902, designed for the Vienna Secession building in conjunction with an exhibition of Max Klinger’s statue of Beethoven in April-June 1902. The figure in the drawing remains on the middle wall of the original frieze now exhibited in the Österreichische Galerie in Untere Belvedere, Vienna.
