Devoted to Art: Chris Martin at Studio Rondinone

A few years ago, artist Ugo Rondinone bought a dilapidated church on Fifth Avenue in Harlem, restored it and transformed it into his studio and residence. The religious space retains its original soaring proportions but now hosts the art-world faithful. The evening of 4 May, Rondinone opened up the grand setting for a dinner and celebration of an exhibition of Chris Martin’s mixed-media paintings. Showing another artist is something Rondinone hopes to do every May during the Frieze art fair. Martin, the inaugural artist, chatted about his densely layered paintings with guests and hosts Johanna Flaum, Charlie Moffett and Courtney Kremers of Sotheby’s. The Roman-style meal was served by candlelight at a banquet table arrayed with still-life worthy fruits and greenery. Click ahead to see the spectacular setting and artwork.
