The American Flag in The Americans

Robert Frank chose the symbolically charged American flag as a visual opener for each of the four meticulously sequenced sections of The Americans, and its meaning shifts throughout the book. In a 1967 interview, Frank said of his use of the flag as a motif, “I liked the visual, graphic image of that flag. I think it’s a very good flag.” – Beth Iskander
