Didier Ludot Collection Dazzles in White Glove Auction

In its first Couture auction on 8 July, Sotheby’s sale of the Didier Ludot collection realised a total of €966,259 ($1,069,533), three times the pre-sale estimate. Held in association with Kerry Taylor Auctions, the sale was fittingly timed to coincide with the Fall 2015 Haute Couture shows in Paris. Front-row fixtures such as Vogue’s editor at large Hamish Bowles and Dita Von Teese were on hand as Sotheby’s offered a rare chance for bidders to take home a piece of sartorial history. Ludot, whose Palais Royal boutique has long been the destination for those seeking the best of vintage fashion, curated the sale from his personal archive. Items ranged from Madame Grès gowns and Christian Dior cocktail dresses to Courrèges boots and hippy-chic YSL hats. Leading the sale was the knockout cover lot: a pink ostrich feather Balenciaga dress that fetched €56,250 ($62,262) and a roomful of applause. – Stephanie Sporn
