LONDON – This February’s wine sale focusses on Classed Growth Bordeaux in vintages from 2000 to 2006, representing the more affordable end of the spectrum. Here are a few of my favourites:

Lots 117–119 and 1330–1331: Château Léoville Las Cases 2000

Only just beginning to show its true colours, this fabulous 2000, to rival the 1982, 1986, 1990 and 1996, has a long life ahead of it.

Estimate £1,500–2,000 per 12 bottles.

Lots 708-710: Château Ducru Beaucaillou 2005

As with many 2005s this has everything, in abundance. Power, grace, multi-layered and a firm structure that will see this well into the future.

Estimate £1,100–1,300 per 12 bottles.

Lots 919-923: Château Pichon Longueville Baron 2006

One of the top wines of 2006. Powerful and masculine in its youth, yet a few years in bottle have resulted in this shedding some of its muscle and becoming ever more elegant and sophisticated.

Estimate £550–650 per 12 bottles.

Lots 158–159: Château Mouton Rothschild 2001 (12 bts)

Overlooked, possibly because of the flashy, expensive and extraordinary 2000, the 2001 is more ‘classic’ and has taken time to come round. Beautiful Mouton cassis nose, glossy and long.

Estimate £2,400–3,200.

Lots 295–296: Château Léoville Poyferré 2003 (12 bts)

Hot, hot, hot, that’s 2003 in a nutshell. The ripeness and low acid of many Bordeaux from this extraordinary vintage may not be to everyone’s style but I recently had this at the Hawksmoor and it was spectacular. Beautifully perfumed, silky and with great minerality off-setting the ripeness. This is such a consistent property and comparatively well priced.

Estimate £880–950.

Lots 875–876: Blason de l'Evangile 2005 (12 bts)

Second wine of the outstanding Pomerol estate, Chateau L’Evangile, an absolute steal from this wonderful vintage.

Estimate £260–340.

Lot 1025: Château Franc Mayne 2006 (24 bts)

Seriously affordable St Emilion for every day drinking. This is charming, well made and will keep in the cellar for a good few more years. A bargain.

Estimate £200–300.
