The Naming of the Animals by John Miles of Northleach 1781-1849. Estimate £15,000–20,000.
LONDON – Born in Farmington, Gloucestershire in 1781, little is known about John Miles of Northleach other than that he came from a prominent family and was listed in the 1841 census, at the age of 60, as being an artist, along with one of his sons, Henry. This work with its religious subject matter is rare among his paintings, which usually depict prize-winning farm animals and contemporary scenes and events. But the subject of Adam naming the animals allowed him the freedom to paint exotic species. This was acquired at Sotheby’s London on 22 July 1986, and another signed version smaller than this one, with a different arrangement of animals, was sold at Sotheby’s in July 1984.
