Following our July Old Master sales, my colleague Chloe Stead and I took a road trip through Flanders, a region of North Western Belgium that from the 15th–17th centuries played host to a revolution in the development of western art history. With Chloe at the helm of our trusted and highly fuel-efficient VW, we diligently explored the riches housed in various museums and chapels of the most important centers of Flemish art: Leuven, Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges. Such focused study is the stuff of dreams for any young Old Master specialist. By day the likes of van Eyck, van der Weyden and Memling were our travel companions; by night we had to settle for the best beer and frites in the world.
