What are timed online auctions?

Timed Auctions are online-only auctions that run for a set duration of time over which bidders will bid competitively over a series of days/weeks. The highest bidder at the close of the auction will win the item.

Bidding and registration for "Wanderlust: Timed Online Auction" will be available from April 4th through April 16th at 12pm EDT.

By participating in the sale you are agreeing to be bound by Sotheby’s Conditions of Sale and Terms of Guarantee, which can be found on each lot page or at Sothebys.com/SaturdayatSothebys

FAQs

1. How do I register for a Timed online auction?

Bidding and registration for "Wanderlust: Timed Online Auction" will be available from April 4th through April 16th at 12pm EDT.  First, login to our website with your mySothebys username and password.  Second, register for the Saturday at Sotheby’s: Wanderlust auction by going to Sothebys.com/SaturdayatSothebys and clicking ‘Register’ from the auction platform. If you don’t have a mySotheby’s username and password, you can create one by clicking ‘Login’ at the top of the Sotheby’s website.

2. If I’ve bid with Sotheby’s before, do I need to create a mySotheby’s account?

If you have bid with Sotheby’s online in the past, you are already eligible to bid in this auction.

If you have a mySotheby’s account, but have never transacted online before, you will need to complete the full registration process prior to participating in a Timed Auction. This will involve entering your billing address and credit card information.

If you have bid with Sotheby’s in person (at a brick and mortar auction) but never in an online sale, you will still need to create an online mySotheby’s account.

3. Where can I find Sotheby’s Conditions of Sale and Terms of Guarantee?

The Conditions of Sale are included in the e-catalogue and every lot detail page. It is important to read the Conditions of Sale before you bid in Sotheby’s auctions. By bidding in this auction, you are agreeing to the Conditions of Sale and Terms of Guarantee.

4. Where can I get details about a lot that I’m interested in?

Lot descriptions and condition reports are available on the e-catalogue from April 4th- April 16th. We encourage you to contact our specialists to learn more about the property:

5. How do I place a bid?

Bids may be submitted through the online platform from the start of the auction until bidding on the specific lot closes. You may bid either by submitting a starting bid and increasing it if you are notified that you have been outbid, or you may submit a maximum bid. If a maximum bid is submitted, incremental bids will be placed on your behalf as much as is required to ensure you remain the highest bidder (up to your maximum bid). In cases when two equivalent maximum bids are submitted, the first bid received will be slated as the highest bidder.

Sotheby’s uses predetermined bidding increments. Please refer to the bidding increments link on each lot detail page for the list of increments.

6. How do I know when the lot is closing for bidding?

An end time is displayed for each lot on the lot detail page.  Lots will close in one minute increments unless a bid is placed within 5 minutes of a lot's scheduled end time, in which case we will extend the sale of that lot by 5 minutes from the time of the last bid.  The extension of any one lot's closing time does not affect any other lot's closing time; therefore, it is possible that lots will close out of numerical lot order.

7. How will I know if I have won the lot?

When you place your bid, an on-screen notification will tell you if you are the highest bidder. If you are outbid before the lot closes, you will receive an email notification stating you have been outbid. If you remain the highest bidder when your lot closes, you will receive an email notifying you that you are the winner of the lot.

The status of your bid is always available on the lot page if you are logged into your Sotheby’s account. We encourage you to check back regularly until bidding on the lot closes.

8. What is the buyer’s premium?

A buyer’s premium will be added to the hammer price and is payable by the buyer of a lot as part of the total purchase price. The buyer’s premium is 25% of the hammer price up to and including $200,000, 20% of any amount in excess of $200,000 up to and including $3,000,000, and 12% of any amount in excess of $3,000,000.

9. What information can you provide on sales and use of tax?

New York sales tax is charged on the hammer price, buyer's premium and any other applicable charges on any property picked up or delivered in New York State, regardless of the state or country in which the purchaser resides or does business. Purchasers who wish to use their own shipper who is not a considered a "common carrier" by the New York Department of Taxation and Finance will be charged New York sales tax on the entire charge regardless of the destination of the property. Please refer to "Information on Sales and Use Tax Related to Purchases at Auction" in the Conditions of Sale.

10. How do I pay for my purchase?

Instructions will be included with your invoice after the sale.  Subject to the limitations and requirements in the Conditions of Sale, we accept the following forms of payment: American Express, MasterCard, Visa, cash, check, and wire transfer.

11. How do I arrange shipping after the auction?

After the auction, Sotheby’s will provide a shipping quote for our shipping services along with your sale invoice, however you can also opt to ship using your own shipper or to pick up your lot from our offices in New York. We strongly recommend that you request a shipping quote for a lot prior to placing and confirming your bid.
