Francesco Scavullo (1921-2004) found beauty everywhere. Through his lens, we experience the dynamic energy of Bruce Jenner, fresh from winning the 1976 men's decathlon, the ingénue charm of an 11-year-old Brooke Shields, the fearless exposure of Andy Warhol's Factory stars, and the not-so-subtle sensuality of countless Cosmo cover girls (a magazine that Scavullo shaped for nearly thirty years.)

But while his expressive portraits speak volumes, the stories behind them add even more insight into Scavullo's connection to and appreciation for his unique cast of muses.

FRANCESCO SCAVULLO, BROOKE SHIELDS. ESTIMATE $5,000-7,000

"It was my first Cosmo cover and it was the first time I ever had bangs. I was very proud of those bangs." —Brooke Shields

FRANCESCO SCAVULLO, BRUCE JENNER. ESTIMATE $1,500-2,000

"Bruce Jenner was a riot. He ran, he jumped, he stood on his head, and had a lively, fun disposition." —Francesco Scavullo, interviewed by The New York Times

FRANCESCO SCAVULLO, MIKHAIL BARYSHNIKOV. ESTIMATE $4,000-6,000

"Dancers have a tendency not to want to dance in the studio. Baryshnikov was one of the few who came in and danced and danced and danced." —Francesco Scavullo, Scavullo: Photographs 50 Years

FRANCESCO SCAVULLO, TRUMAN CAPOTE. ESTIMATE $1,500-2,000

"I said to him, 'Everybody calls you the Holy Terror.' With that he put his hands to his face, imitating the horns of a devil." —Francesco Scavullo, Scavullo: Photographs 50 Years

FRANCESCO SCAVULLO, ELIZABETH TAYLOR. ESTIMATE $1,500-2,000

"I couldn't stand it the first time Way [Bandy] made me up, mostly because I don't like people putzing around my eyes. I always feel they're going to stick a pencil in. He was the first person I’d let make me up, and I was very, very happy that I did. But he had to fight me to do it. I’m just so used to doing my own. I even did it on Cleopatra.” —Elizabeth Taylor, Scavullo Women

FRANCESCO SCAVULLO, SALVADOR DALI. ESTIMATE $4,000-6,000

"I photographed Dali in 1973 and I was fascinated by him. We got on very well. He's a ham. He likes to pose. After our session, he invited me to his every-Sunday-night dinner parties where I met many fascinating people." —Francesco Scavullo, interviewed by The Chicago Tribune

FRANCESCO SCAVULLO, JANIS JOPLIN. ESTIMATE $1,000-1,500

"I started photographing and Janis began dancing and singing. I fell in love with her. It was a magical, incredible day. She was a strange mixture of every emotion, strong and gutsy, and yet with such vulnerability and sadness, like a little lost girl. Janis has an outrageous laugh." —Francesco Scavullo, Scavullo: Photographs 50 Years

FRANCESCO SCAVULLO, MUHAMMAD ALI. ESTIMATE $4,000-6,000

"I took many rolls of pictures of Mr. Ali. But I knew I was getting nothing special from him. Finally I goaded Ali saying, 'Are you No. 1 or No. 2?' He became animated and stuck his fist into the camera, leaving no doubt who he thought was No. 1." —Francesco Scavullo, interviewed by The Chicago Tribune

FRANCESCO SCAVULLO, STING AS CHRIST. ESTIMATE $7,000-9,000

"Francesco was very spiritual and had wanted someone to pose as Jesus on the cross. Sting stripped right there and put my Halston cashmere-and-silk scarf around himself like a loincloth. When Sting saw the silk screen of that shot, he put his head down. He was sweet and said it was very humbling for him to play Jesus." —Sean Byrnes, Scavullo's life partner and stylist, interviewed by New York Magazine

FRANCESCO SCAVULLO, LIZA MINNELLI. ESTIMATE $1,000-1,500

"I've been photographing Liza since she was seventeen. Liza has a lot of charm and warmth, and a ton of energy. I love her cropped-off hair and the emphasis she gives her eyes. Her choice in clothes of black, red, and white is perfect for her." —Francesco Scavullo, Scavullo Women
