The Magic Flower Game is one of the finest examples of Dorothea Tanning’s work to come to the market and will be featured in our upcoming private selling exhibition Cherchez la Femme: Women and Surrealism. In the same private collection since 1970, this painting, from a key period in the artist’s oeuvre, is filled with many of the signs and symbols that would dominate her best work for the next decade. Painted a year before she met her husband Max Ernst and two years before she began a lifelong friendship with Joseph Cornell,The Magic Flower Game encapsulates a moment of primary importance in Tanning’s life and career.
