Alberto Giacometti's Homme traversant une place par un matin de soleil is among the works offered from the Jan Krugier Collection.

NEW YORK - I've arrived in New York to chilly, but mercifully warmer temperatures than my colleagues here have been experiencing recently. I immediately made my way to the 10th floor galleries of Sotheby's headquarters on York Avenue. The highlights of our forthcoming Impressionist, Modern & Surrealist Art sales are being unpacked from their crates having just arrived from exhibition in Hong Kong where they have been very enthusiastically received by our clients in Asia. The galleries are a frenzy of activity to get everything ready in time to welcome our clients to this exhibition of highlights from London.

I'm especially excited to see the works from the private collection of Jan Krugier. Individually, many of these works would represent a major sale highlight but in its entirety Krugier's private collection of works on paper is unsurpassed. In total Sotheby's will offer 37 works from the private collection in our Impressionist, Modern and Surrealist Art Evening sale and a further 90 lots in the Day sale. Here in New York we have 30 of the greatest pieces, by artists as diverse as Goya, Degas, Cezanne, Picasso and Hopper.

Pablo Picasso's Composition (Composition au Minotaure), 1936. Estimate £1,800,000-2,500,000.

Having been witness to unimaginable horrors during World War II, Krugier later spoke of the redemptive power of art and his belief that the greatest art could open minds for the better and transcend time. Standing here, surrounded by the works that Krugier chose with his wife, Marie-Anne, to live with in their home in Geneva his vision is palpable. The works here were such personal choices that the collection is also a reflection of the essence of Krugier's superlative taste and his eye for the very best. Collectors are already responding with enormous enthusiasm to the works, with enquiries coming in thick and fast. I'm looking forward to a busy and exciting exhibition ahead.
