SAVANNAH - When Telfair Museums puts on its annual fundraiser, they do it in full Southern Style! Led by Chair Helen Johnson, and under the protective eye of newly appointed Director and C.E.O. Lisa Grove, the "Telfair Team" welcomed a huge crowd of supporters for this gem of a museum – it is the oldest public museum in America’s South - which is housed in two historic buildings by English Regency architect William Jay and a very modern one by Moshe Safdie.
A silent auction of artists’ works took place on Thursday, February 23, followed by a progressive celebration on Friday, February 24. The second evening is not for the faint-hearted. The event begins with cocktails and a second silent auction in the first floor of the Telfair Academy, followed by the live auction on the second floor, in which $118,500 was raised, including a generous cash gift from Bob Jepson.
The crowd then moved across the street to the Jepson Center for an elegant dinner – white tie preferred - since this is a true Southern event. This might sound like enough for one evening, but not in Savannah.
Back to the Telfair Academy, where the live auction space has been transformed in to site for what is called the BASH, in which an additional 200 guests, "dressed down" in black tie and full-length ball gowns, join the white tie crowd, gyrating to an enthusiastic, not to mention extremely loud, dance band, with an exuberant female vocalist encouraging the guests to loosen up various body parts and dance the night away.
Your auctioneer and correspondent did not make it to the finish, repairing to an extremely authentic British Pub, The Sixpence Inn, to lubricate his aching limbs, welcomed in spite of being distinctly overdressed for this final milieu.
