NEW YORK - For the third consecutive year, Sotheby’s achieved record jewelry sales, with 2014 totaling $603 million, the highest annual total in company history. This landmark year saw nearly 2,400 people from 74 countries participating in our worldwide jewellery auctions and their enthusiastic bidding, both in our salerooms and online, drove 69% of lots sold to achieve prices above their high estimates. It was a year in which Sotheby’s set auction records for blue and yellow diamonds, rubies, Kashmir sapphires and Cartier jewels, and Sotheby’s also achieved the top two prices paid for jewels at auction. In April Sotheby’s Hong Kong sold the Hutton-Mdivani Jadeite Bead Necklace by Cartier for USD 27.4 million and in November in New York a rare Fancy Vivid Blue Diamond Pendant from the Collection of Mrs. Paul Mellon was sold for USD 32.6 million.
Sotheby's offers the most extraordinary jewels in the world to discerning collectors looking for special designs dating from the 19th century to the present day. Our auctions feature rare and iconic examples of the artistic creativity of Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Tiffany & Co., Bulgari, Harry Winston, JAR, Graff, David Webb, Verdura, Boucheron, Chaumet, Suzanne Belperron, Boivin and Alexandre Reza, amongst others. The selection of top quality white and coloured diamonds, coloured gemstones and natural pearls is wide and varied, with many fresh-to-the-market examples from private collections, such as The Graff Ruby which sold in Geneva for a record-breaking price of US $8.6 million in 2014.
The international team of jewellery specialists at Sotheby’s believes that jewellery is the most personal of the decorative arts and that jewels have a story to tell about the women who owned them. Their choices reflect their lifestyles, and often provide a fascinating window into another era. From noble and celebrity provenance to prominent philanthropic families, we’ve been privileged to handle the jewels of many distinguished women including The Duchess of Windsor, Brooke Astor, Ava Gardner, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Mrs. Charles Wrightsman, Maria Callas, Lily Marinho and Gina Lollobrigida.
Our sales take place seasonally from February to July and September to December in New York, Geneva, Hong Kong and London. In advance of our forthcoming sales, we would be delighted to provide you with a free and confidential jewellery valuation. Please contact us to make an appointment.
