NEW YORK – Reminders of a bygone era, cigarette cases have long been associated with style and glamour. With wide-ranging designs, there was a cigarette case for everyone – even the cheekiest of gentlemen. Featuring nude women belly dancing, bathing and even dueling, the fifteen-lot sequence of cigarette cases with erotic imagery offered in our upcoming Collections sales is charmingly seductive. The less adventurous owner of such a case would have hidden the racy scenes inside a double cover, but perhaps it is surprising how bold many of the owners seemed to have been. Our Fall 2015 season comprised two dedicated catalogues in the 19th century category. Our Single-Owner sale, Property from a Distinguished Private Asian Collection, brought $2.8million, and the 19th Century Furniture and Decorative Arts auction $5.37 million, together achieving over $8 million. Significant results were achieved for exceptional pieces by François Linke, including a fine and rare ‘Grande Commode’ for $466,000, and an important pair of Louis XIV style cabinets after a model by Andre-Charles Boulle which realized $826,000.
