PROPERTY FROM A CHICAGO PRIVATE COLLECTION
A Fragmentary Roman Marble Head of a Young God or Ruler, circa 1st Century A.D.
his head lifted and turned slightly to the right, with parted lips and thick wavy hair falling over the temples, the neck worked for insertion into a statue. Height 14 in. 35.6 cm.
Fragmentary as shown, extensive fire damage has turned certain areas, such as proper right side of face and most of nose, into a kind of chalky limestone, entire head including neck is riddled with deep cracks and reinforced in back with metal tenons, some areas underneath neck, where crystals are flaking off extensively, appear to be suffering from serious salt damage as well, back was carved flat in antiquity and with a central recess in which are remains of an iron pin fastened with lead. In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion. NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
