A German goldsmith and restorer by trade, Reinhold Vasters (1827-1909) is best known for his exceptional copies and forgeries of Renaissance jewelry and objets d'art. A drawing by Vasters  in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London,  shows his design for the present piece with details of the gilt silver mounts and the present ivory sleeve (inv. no. E2720-1919). The museum's collection of Vasters' drawings of his metalwork were rediscovered in the early 1980s, identifying objects in some well-known collections that were previously thought to be 16th century. The present tankard incorporates an ivory sleeve which is indeed 17th century but mounted with Vasters' later gilt silver mounts.
