Condition

This beautiful secretaire is in reasonable conserved condition. The mounts are all original and in good condition. The marble top apparently original and in good condition. The red lacquer of attractive colour but presenting small losses throughout which can be professionally repaired. There are localised areas of retouching to the lacquer panels throughout as expected although surface is largely original. The outside border to front, of plain red, seems to have been redecorated. The sides show horizontal crackling which might need stabilizing. The inside in good condition. The nice tooled leather surface probably replaced in the 19th century and with one crack. One drawer handle replaced. Two keys. A very decorative piece with great presence but that would benefit from professional attention, according to taste.

François Rübestuck (c.1722 - 1785), reçu maître in 1766, in spite of a relatively short career, demonstrated great ability with styles both fully representative of the Louis XV period, the transitional period, and the Louis XVI period. He is notable for a number of commodes and secrétaires veneered in Chinese or Japanese lacquer of the Louis XV period. His later work is notable for its marquetry panels, particularly those depicting musical trophies. Similar secrétaires stamped Rübestuck and with identical mounts, however in black lacquer, were sold Sotheby's London, 16 December 1998, lot 40; Sotheby's Monaco, 4 December 1983, lot 394 and Christie's London, 3 December 1981, lot 106.
