拍品資料及來源

In 1879, Antoni Roux commissioned a series of watercolours by famous artists of the time, to illustrate Jean de La Fontaine's Fables. When Roux exhibited a selection of these in May 1881, Moreau's watercolours attracted the most critical acclaim, leading Roux to commission a further thirty-nine illustrations from Moreau, which,  upon reception, pleased Roux as much as the first series. Moreau executed four known replicas only after this magnificent group, one of them is the work presented here. We notice some differences between our replica and the original watercolour, for instance in the peasant's robes and the architecture. These variations are also reflected in a preparatory drawing kept in the Musée Gustave Moreau, Paris (fig. 2).
