Condition

Overall, this work is in generally good condition. The colours in the catalogue illustration are more saturated compared to the original work. There is a shallow mark of the stretcher along the lower edge. There are minor and unobtrusive traces of craquelures by the upper left, by the centre of the left margin and by the centre of the right side. There are a few yellowish traces of the original varnish that are inherent to the artist's choice of media and working method. There are two thin darker refraction towards the lower margin to the left and to the right on the inscription "Con anima".

Mario Schifano è i suoi quadri. Dunque guardi i quadri e conoscerà Schifano.  Goffredo Parise, in Mario Schifano, catalogo mostra, Galleria Odyssia, Roma, e Studio Marconi, Milano 1965

A. Listen, talk to me a bit about Mario Schifano and his paintings.
B. They are the same thing. Mario Schifano is his paintings. So look at the paintings and you will know Schifano.

Already towards the late Fifties, the informal wave that had characterized post-war Europe was gradually waning in Italy. Artists such as Fontana, Manzoni and Castellani in Milan, or Schifano, Festa and Angeli in Rome, began to aspire to overcome the informal experience, bringing the art scene in Italy towards new horizons on the international level. While in Milan the exploration of new artistic directions took place on the monochrome-spatialist side, in Rome it took place on the iconic-pop one.
Around 1960, some young Roman artists gathered in the collective of Scuola di Piazza del Popolo began to gravitate around the artistic milieu of Galleria La Tartaruga directed by Plinio De Martiis. It is also the year of Goffredo Parise’s arrival in Rome, writer, journalist and critic who found an extremely fervent artistic and cultural climate. Acute observer of the Roman artistic environment of those years, Parise found in the art of Schifano, above all, a direct and empathetic contact with reality, and described him as: "The prince, a true Ahmed from a thousand and one nights, that is Mario Schifano, now a famous painter and famous for other reasons too. He was an extremely handsome, homeless, immediately brilliant genius boy, snob quantum sufficit who painted with fulminant speed, like de Pisis, of which he is the only true heir, his monochromatic and provocative paintings, with drippings that already indicated his immediately future art."
Parise himself introduced the exhibition Mario Schifano at the Galleria Odyssia in Rome and at the Studio Marconi in Milan in 1965, in which the work Con anima here presented was exhibited. Created in 1965, when Schifano matured an interest in film and photography, this work presents a composition broken down into its linguistic parts, almost fragmentary, typical in Schifano's production, in which the opening of windows over a new reality or invention, a landscape that does not belong to reality but rather to memory, places at its center the problem of vision. The vast, continuous and undefined blue extends over the surface, covering the entire landscape and bridging the horizon to the sky, an aspect that will be later taken up by others like Tano Festa but with different artistic developments. The approximate and ambiguous outlines, as ambiguous are the forms of memory, are features that can also be found in the series of Paesaggi anemici (anemic landscapes), where the image is not mere representation, but charges itself of meaning and urges to participate 'with soul' to the construction of a symbolic space. Con anima of 1965, with barely outlined colours as if suspended in the essential and iconic two-dimensionality, fully expresses Schifano’s achievement of a mature language and confirms him as, in the words of Cesare Vivaldi, a "true pictorial monstrum".
