This well-preserved wood engraving shows the vast intersection of Broadway and Fifth Avenue from Twenty-third Street, including a portion of Madison Square Park. It is Spring in the year 1873. The great square is filled with activity and the sidewalk in front of the Fifth Avenue Hotel is mobbed. The Fifth Avenue Hotel was the most fashionable hotel in the city, and the whole neighborhood was in social ascent. The "Looking North" of the title is apt as the city was growing northward at a very rapid pace, and the rich and prosperous followed the tide.
