Jean-Claude Philippe Isidore Hedde, director of the Musée d'art et d'industrie de Saint-Étienne near Lyons, argues that the inventor of automata, Jacques Vaucauson (1709-1782), should also be recognised as the inventor of the automatic weaving loom. Vaucauson's proposals for the automation of the weaving process came to nothing, but were perfected and implemented in 1804 by the merchant and weaver Joseph Marie Jacquard (1752-1834).
