The final section of this work describes an integrating machine - a form of planimeter to calculate the area of an irregular curved shape - whose description was first published in 1825. This volume seems to have been published following the Congress of Italian Scientists which took place in Florence in 1841, to whom he demonstrated his improvements to Newton's telescope.

Babbage evidently owned three or more copies of this book; two others were included in the en-bloc sale catalogue of his library, Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge, Mathematical and Scientific Library of the late Charles Babbage (London 1872), item 257 (those copies also inscribed by Babbage). See, generally, M.R. Williams, "The scientific library of Charles Babbage" in Annals of the History of Computing 3 (1981), pp.237-243.
