Otto Lehmann is best known for his discovery of liquid crystals. This work is the first of two works by the professor on his reported discovery and includes photographs of the crystals through microscopes. Liquid crystals form the basis of modern electronic display systems.

The second volume is a highly technical collection of essays on cathode ray tubes, their use in radar and the emerging computer industry. Soller, Starr and Valley were all members of the MIT Radiation Laboratory staff during the Second World War."It is a single source of information for all information that had been discovered on the topic during World War II" (Tomash & Williams).
