Prime examples of Babbage's early mathematical work. After graduating from Cambridge in 1814 Babbage sought to establish a career as a mathematician, a calling in which he was both talented and prolific. Between 1813 and 1827 he wrote no less than thirty-three books and papers. Volumes II and III (London imprint) of The Journal of Science and the Arts also contain Babbage's "Solutions of some Problems by Means of the Calculus of Functions" (vol.II, pp.371-379; Van Sinderen 8) and his "Note respecting elimination (vol.III, pp.355.357; Van Sinderen 10).
