拍品資料及來源

The copy of the 1651 edition of Vlacq is from the Library of the Piarists in Rome, its title inscribed: “Bibl. S. Pantaleonis Scholarum Piarum” and “Ex libris Alph. Borelli”. Giovanni Alfonso Borelli (1608-1679) spent the last two years of his life giving mathematics lessons to novices of the Order, and finishing his masterpiece on biomechanics, De motu animalium (Rome, 1680-1681). Identical inscriptions are found in three first editions of works by Descartes now in the Biblioteca Nazionale in Rome and in a copy of Gilbert, De mundo nostro sublunari (Amsterdam, 1651) in the Whipple Library, Cambridge University.
