Vernier's treatise describes the instrument he invented, the vernier caliper, used to measure length accurately. As well as a main graduated scale, it also has a movable scale which slides parallel to the main scale to permit more accurate readings to be taken. Nuñez and Clavius had previously attempted to improve the astrolabe by engraving various scales on concentric circular segments. Vernier's instrument provided a mobile scale rather than a series of static scales. Vernier worked as a military engineer for the Spanish Hapsburgs, the rulers of his native Franche-Comté. In 1630 he took his invention to Brussels to show the Infanta of Spain, to whom this edition is dedicated.
