Stifel was, like Luther, an Augustinian and an early reformer (and like Luther a hymn writer and author of theological works). A pupil of Milich at Wittemberg, who really inspired him to write this work, he here sets out the sum total of knowledge about arithmetic and algebra as it then existed, and added some new things of his own. His exceptional knowledge of and skill in number theory is well shown in book II of this work, and it also contains some basic contributions to the idea of logarithmic computation. Stifel was the greatest of sixteenth-century German mathematicians, and this work went through a number of editions. In this copy Melanchthon's name has been inked out on title-page, as was the case in the copy illustrated by Smith on p.225 (where his preface was also removed).
