RARE. “The most important development in arithmetic since the introduction of Hindu-Arabic numerals” (PMM). This is the first work to set forth definitively the theory of decimal fractions. It also contains the first translation into any modern language of the work of Diophantus. The section on decimal fractions had appeared in a thirty-six page pamphlet in Dutch (De Thiende) earlier in the same year, but the privileges for this and the current work were granted on the same day, and it seems that were they were intended to have been issued at the same time. “The Flemish work… appeared first simply because it was a much smaller printing job” (Tomash & Williams).
