Casmann: title inscribed: Ex dono Georgi Hartmanni possidet Hermannus Hassie Landgrauius ad 1637 die 3 Martii (i.e. Hermann IV, Landgrave of Hesse-Rotenburg, 1607-1658); Dukes of Arenberg, Plettenberg'schen Bibliothek, Schloss Nordkirchen, bookplate; bought from Jonathan Hill, New York, 1992

Landgraf Herman IV von Hessen-Rotenburg was a renowned researcher in mathematics and astronomy. In 1624, aged just 17, he wrote an astronomical and meteorological Schreibkalender at Plesse Castle near Göttingen as a gift for his father, Moritz “der Gelehrte” of Hesse-Kassel (1572-1632); his most famous work is the Historia meteorologica, published in 1651 after decades of systematic weather observations. Another book from his library is offered as lot 583.

The appendix to the first work is provided by Bartholomäus Pitiscus, and according to Tomash and Williams is “the first book in which the term trigonometry appeared”.
