A FINE COPY of Rathborne's The Surveyor, one of the most important of a new type of book on surveying in the vernacular that started to appear at this period. "This is the first full-scale practical treatise on geometrical surveying, and is written by a man in touch with the new teaching given at Gresham College, notably Henry Briggs's lectures on logarithms, as well as with the most recent books on both the theoretical and practical sides of the subject such as Ralphe Handson's" (Taylor). The title was engraved by William Hole (Hind II, p.334 no. 29) and the portraits of Prince Charles and the author respectively by Francis Delaram (Hind II, p.217 no.5) and Simon de Passe (Hind II, p.267 no. 49). The second impression of the author’s portrait is a proof before letters (not recorded by Hind).
On the final free-endpaper the London bookseller Francis Hill (d.1644) has written his warranty, promising to refund the purchase price (2s 6d) should the buyer be dissatisfied.
