“We are indebted to David Bryden for pointing out that in his dedication to Prince Albert, Archduke of Austria, Duke of Burgundy and Sovereign of the Netherlands, (ff. *3r misnumbered A3r), Galle mentions dix petits bastons, i.e., 10 small rods that may be used to simplify and speed multiplication, division and the extraction of square and cube roots. This passage has led to claims of priority for Galle over Napier” (Tomash & Williams).
