The first work is on the sector or proportional compass, the invention of which Faulhaber credits to Galileo, and it contains THE FIRST PUBLISHED ILLUSTRATIONS OF GALILEO’S COMPASS. “In addition… this work… describes an instrument to be used for perspective drawing and (p. 25) a newe geheime Invention (new secret invention) to be used for surveying—the secret device was the magnet!” (Tomash & Williams).
The second work is often thought to be about the sector as well, but actually deals with a slightly different instrument, invented in the Netherlands by Daniel Speckle, for the use of surveyors. Faulhaber discusses it again in another 1610 work (lot 169).
