拍品資料及來源

Delmedigo, a rabbi, astronomer and physician born in Crete, moved to Amsterdam in 1626, where he was befriended by Menasseh ben Israel, who agreed to publish his friend's work. "The first part Sefer Elim contained mathematical and astronomical questions by the Karaite scholar Zerah ben Nathan of Troki in Lithuania... In the second part of his work called Maayan gamin he answered Zerah's questions. In the answers we find THE FIRST EXPOSITION IN HEBREW OF THE ASTRONOMICAL THEORIES OF GALILEO GALILEI ABOUT THE MOVEMENTS OF THE SUN AND THE PLANETS, as Delmedigo had become an adherent of Galileo during his student years in Italy. The book was started in September 1628 and Menasseh spared no costs for a beautiful production...". However, the elders of the Sephardic congregation decided that some of Delmedigo's text was unorthodox and Menasseh ben Israel had to agree not to print some of Delmedigo's answers about the kabbalah (Lajb Fuks and R.G. Fuks-Mansfeld, Hebrew typography in the Northern Netherlands, 1585-1815, Leiden 1984-1987, pp.104-105)
