FRANCE, ORDER OF THE SAINT-ESPRIT, CIRCA 1820

描述

The skeletal base for a large gold-backed breast star of the Order, formerly set with diamonds but now retaining only the Dove’s beak and eyes, circa 1820, pierced at the eight points for attachment to a garment with thread, height and width 113mm, very fine condition, in a relatively plain fitted case inscribed ‘No. 3’ on lid.

Charles X of France (1757-1836), King of France (1824-1830).  Princess Marie Anne's inventory, illustrated on the right hand page, mentions: "A green leather case containing a large plaque of the order of the Saint-Esprit, all set with diamonds. This plaque comes from King Charles X and belonged to Duc Robert I de Parme". A note added in 1932 says: "Mounted as a tiara (3 fleur de lys) and corsage". 

Condition

Rubies pinkish red, with typical inclusions visible under close inspection. Scratches consistent with age, with signs of tarnish to the metal. Gross weight approximately 64 grams.

Several labels attached to the base of the case provide reference or inventory numbers 11 (crowned) and 5, a handwritten note Herzoglich Parmaischer Primogenitur Familienschmuck Post Nr. 5 der Inventur des Obersthof. Marschallarntes, dated 16/7/1910, and a separate note reading Plaque de l’ordre du St. Esprit – du Roi Charles X.
