Rembrandt imbued the technique of etching with a sense of spontaneity, which is most visible in the relaxed and freehand quality of line in this sweeping landscape. His experimental and distinctively tactile approach to printmaking is perhaps most evident in the effects of light and atmosphere, skilfully rendered here in the sky.  The vertical wiping of the inked plate perfectly captures the ethereal quality of misting rain.
