Condition

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish is slightly discoloured. There are a few visible retouchings, most notably to the sitter's forehead, his proper left cheek bone, in his proper left shoulder, along the right hand-side of the lower edge, and scattered in the background. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals these, as well as a newer campaign of retouchings, most notably scattered in the background, in his beard and hair, and in his chest. In overall very good condition. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame with losses.
