RUBY VANITY CASE, BOUCHERON, 1940S

The reeded rectangular case decorated at the front with a pierced and engraved design of birds and butterflies amongst flowering vines, accented with collet-set circular-cut rubies, to a concealed push piece, opening to reveal a hinged mirror, a powder compartment, two further lidded compartments and two lipstick holders, measuring approximately 130 x 84 x 20mm, signed Boucheron, numbered, French assay and maker's marks, gross weight approximately 467 grams, fitted black carry case.

Condition

Signed Boucheron Paris, Bt No 875012 (referring to the Breveté or patent), and numbered 82.197. French assay marks for silver throughout, French assay mark for gold/silver and stamped 'Or Argent' to side of lid. French maker's marks throughout, H&M with number 7. Rubies deep purplish-red, with typical inclusions visible under magnification, some surface-reaching, some with small areas of minor chipping and wear to facet edges. All hinges and lids in good working order, closing securely. Right hand side of mirror with restored section to hinge, can flip open when case is opened, but closes securely with good tension. Push piece in good working order. Lipstick holders intact, one with internal holder for lipstick, one without. Comb deficient. Powder grille intact, powder puff deficient. Mirror intact, mostly in good condition, with minor areas of mild discolouration and a small chip to corner of right-hand mirror, mostly concealed by frame. Light scratches to metal consistent with wear, some more noticeable scratches around pushpiece, some patches of minor discolouration to metal. Some dents to edge of box on lower left corner, another dent to upper left corner restored, with solder repair visible. In good condition, commensurate with age.
